Feminist Generation Condemns Anti-Muslim Shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego

Feminist Generation condemns the anti-Muslim shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego. We stand in solidarity with the Muslim community in San Diego and with all those impacted by this act of anti-Muslim racism, hate, and violence.

An attack on a place of worship and community is an attack on the fundamental right of people to live, gather, and practice their faith in safety and dignity. Anti-Muslim violence and Islamophobia continue to threaten communities across the country, fueled by racism, xenophobia, and political rhetoric that dehumanizes Muslim people.

As feminists, we reject all forms of oppression, including Islamophobia, white supremacy, and gendered racial violence. Our movements for justice are inseparable from the fight against Islamophobia and the protection of marginalized communities facing targeted attacks because of who they are or what they believe. We call on community leaders, elected officials, and institutions to take immediate action to confront anti-Muslim hate, ensure accountability, and invest in the safety and well-being of Muslim communities in San Diego and across the country.

This attack, carried out by two teenagers, reflects a deeply problematic trend of youth gun violence produced in part by anti-Muslim rhetoric and white supremacist discourse within online communities targeting young people – particularly young men. These predatory online communities target young men and scapegoat vulnerable communities, misplacing blame and amplifying hatred, while encouraging violence. This harm is magnified due to the ease of access to guns in America and the normalization of violence under patriarchy. We must address online hate rhetoric, the culture of violence, and access to guns to protect our communities and end these horrific acts of white supremacist, patriarchal violence.

We honor and mourn Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha/Abu Ezz, and Nader Awad, the community members murdered in this horrific display of targeted hatred. We send our strength and solidarity to their families and communities, who they died protecting from Islamophobic gun violence.

To our Muslim siblings: We mourn with you, we stand beside you, and we remain committed to building a world where everyone can live free from fear and violence.

In solidarity,

Feminist Generation
