Feminists Reject Supreme Court’s Attack on Black Political Power & Demand Immediate Action

The Supreme Court has launched a direct attack on Black political power. As feminists we are outraged, and we must fight back.

The Court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais dismantles the critical, hard-won protections of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act that outlawed racially discriminatory gerrymandering. This decision enables states to draw voting maps that will disenfranchise millions of voters of color. At least five states–Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Tennessee–have already convened legislative sessions to gerrymander their maps. This judicial attack by unelected members of a nine-seat Court unilaterally rolled back decades of progress advanced by the Civil Rights Movement and the democratically enacted will of the American people with the passage of the Voting Rights Act.

Feminist Generation rejects this unconstitutional attempt to disenfranchise communities of color. We demand immediate action from Congress and state legislatures to defend and advance civil rights, including passing legislation to outlaw gerrymandering and limit the Supreme Court’s power to take away our rights.

Trump and his MAGA regime know they are losing. They know we as voters will not stand for their attacks on our communities. That’s why they are coming for our political power. As we approach the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America, we will continue to fight for a truly multiracial democracy in which all people, regardless of race or zipcode, can fully and equally participate.

We turn to the rich lessons and legacy of the Civil Rights Movement, including the youth organizers of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and Freedom Summer, which first made the Voting Rights Act possible. They showed us how to organize and how to win. As feminists, it is our duty to continue to fight against white supremacy in our democracy.

We must fight back in the courts, in the legislature, and in our communities as we educate and mobilize our peers to vote for our rights and our futures. This moment demands nothing less.
