Feminist Generation Demands Justice for Adriana Smith & All Abortion-Seekers

HER LIFE MATTERED. We are outraged and heartbroken by the pain endured by Adriana Smith and her family at the hands of the “LIFE Act,” Georgia’s law criminalizing abortion after 6-weeks.

Adriana Smith was a loving mother, cherished daughter, and caring nurse. At nine weeks pregnant, Adriana was tragically declared brain dead. But the state kept her alive as a human incubator, against her wishes and those of her family, to prematurely birth her son at the point of fetal viability. The “LIFE Act” denied Adriana Smith her dignity and peace as she was forced to remain pregnant, on life support, for 16-weeks.

Feminist Generation demands justice for Adriana Smith. We demand an end to anti-Black, racist, misogynist laws that strip Black women of their humanity in the name of “life.” We demand a future where Black women and queer people are trusted, free, and safe.

We demand justice for all abortion-seekers denied their bodily autonomy and lives at the hands of racist, classist abortion criminalization laws. We demand reproductive justice with free, accessible abortion for all, without exception.

We strongly condemn the far-right’s escalating attacks criminalizing and limiting abortion access.

In June, Donald Trump revoked the requirement mandating hospitals provide emergency abortion care, further jeopardizing abortion-seekers and providers trying to obtain and administer urgent, life-saving care. Just last week, the Supreme Court published its decision in Medina v. Planned Parenthood which allows South Carolina to withhold state funding from Planned Parenthood, opening the door for states to make abortion inaccessible to the predominantly poor and working people who rely on Planned Parenthood clinics to access reproductive care.

Republicans just passed a budget that will defund 200+ reproductive clinics and strip millions of people, primarily poor and BIPOC communities, of healthcare to access abortion services, reproductive care, domestic violence programs, and more.

Feminist Generation rejects the government’s policing of our bodies, futures, and lives. We urge all feminists to unite with us in combating this state-sanctioned violence through building power and shifting culture, material conditions, and public policy to realize reproductive justice for all.

This includes fighting for a federal Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).

State-level ERAs have stopped abortion bans in states like Utah and reversed decisions to block medicaid funding for abortion care in states like Pennsylvania and Nevada. We need the power of the ERA for all in every zip code. We are in the fight of and for our lives. Intersectional grassroots feminist organizing is how we fight for back. Get organized today.
